Valentine's Day Conversation Heart Banner

Once a month I will be adding directions for making a seasonal craft. These are all easy enough to make with no prior experience. I hope you enjoy making these as much as I do!

This month I will show you how to make this adorable Conversation Heart Banner to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Supplies Necessary - (I purchased everything online)

  • 12 unfinished wood hearts (3"-4" size)

  • 6 different pastel acrylic paint colors (orange, purple, green, yellow, pink, and blue)

  • red acrylic paint

  • paint brush

  • alphabet letters stamp set

  • 12 ft cord or ribbon (I used left over macrame cord)

  • white school glue or hot glue/hot glue gun

  • blue painters tape or masking tape

  • paper plate

  • paper towels

Directions

  1. Protect your table while painting! Tape the wood hearts to table to hold them secure while you paint. Paint one side of each heart - 2 of each pastel color. Save the red paint for the letters! Let them dry completely.

  2. Decide which phrases you want to add. I used 6 classics - LOVE YOU, KISS ME, CUTE, XOXO, BE MINE and SWEET. Gather the letter stamps needed to spell your phrases.

  3. Prepare the paint station for stamping the phrases on your hearts. You will be "loading" the red acrylic paint on each letter stamp and then directly applying it onto the painted heart. It is important to prepare the red paint because if you dip the letter stamp into a dot of paint it will clog up the stamp and won't leave a clean stamp. To avoid this, squirt a small dot (dime-sized) of red acrylic paint toward one side of the paper plate. Use one edge of a paper towel to drag that paint dot along the paper plate to thin it out in a streak.

  4. Load each letter stamp with red paint by lightly tapping it in the thinnest part of the paint streak. Test the quality of your stamp by testing it on a paper towel. Adjust your technique of adding paint to the stamp until you are happy and consistent with how the stamps are printing. (See photo above)

  5. Start stamping your phrases on each heart. Be kind to yourself! The letters might not always be in a straight line or stamped perfectly. Real candy conversation hearts are imperfect too! It is part of the charm. Allow the finished hearts and phrases to dry completely.

  6. Now you will attach the hearts to your ribbon or cord. Before gluing anything, find the center or your ribbon or cord. Make sure you start from the center of the cord and work toward each end when deciding placement so it is centered from the start. Lay your hearts along the cord or ribbon about 2" apart. You can move them closer or farther apart depending on your preference. When you like the spacing, flip your hearts over to the back side, maintaining the distance between each. Attach each heart to the cord or ribbon with a small amount of white school glue or small dots of hot glue. Allow to dry untouched for several hours.
